Art of Spring
Artist in Residence: Sarah Richards Samuelson
This year we have invited well-loved painter Sarah Samuelson to partner with us as our first ever Artist in Residence.
As a child, Sarah was constantly drawing and painting. She continued to nurture her talents and skills as an artist and received her BFA degree from Brigham Young University. She went on to teach at Utah Valley University for several years, teaching painting, drawing, color theory, and art history.
Sarah loves to watch her brush put down colors, shapes, and textures; the way they complement and invigorate each other intrigues her. She paints to preserve the beauty that is around her. The artist says painting is a spiritual process for her. It is a way for her to express her gratitude for the beauty of God’s creations, in a format that can be shared with all.
She prepares her surface by first thinking about the color palette that will be used. She paints abstractly at first, then sketches the image with soft vine charcoal, fixes the drawing onto the surface, and continues to paint, letting the early processes show through in her finished piece of art. Sarah is constantly sketching her surroundings. Many of her paintings come from her sketch books.
Stop by her tent located just past the creek between the Rose Garden and the Grand Allee for a chance to meet Sarah, watch her create a digital painting, find out where she might be set-up making traditional painting, and just absorb a little of her infectious passion for tulips and the Ashton Gardens.

Yes! The Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival wouldn’t be possible without our incredible volunteers. Volunteers applications for the 2022 Tulip Festival are closed, but check back next year for more information!
Each year our Ashton Gardens Designers create a new Tulip Festival design, which makes each year’s Festival wonderfully unique. Because of this, the tulip bulbs from this year’s Festival will be dug up from the gardens to make room for next year’s tulip bulbs.
After the tulip bulbs are removed from the flower beds, they are available for purchase from the Ashton Gardens. The Tulip Bulb Sale begins at the end of May, but specific information will be posted online once it’s available. You can use them to plant in your own garden, or they make great gifts for friends who would love to plant a piece of the Tulip Festival in their own yards!
Please fill out the form, linked below to cancel FREE member reservation tickets.
Yes! The applicable cost of your venue admission can be applied toward the purchase of a membership. Visit the guest services desk or call 801-768-2300 to learn more.
Visitors are welcome to take snapshots (informal, non-posed photographs) for private use. Snapshots may be taken of the plants, gardens, or members of their group during their visit to Thanksgiving Point.
Photography Sessions require the purchase of a Thanksgiving Point Photo Pass, available for purchase at the Ashton Gardens Visitor Center. A photography session is an event where a photographer/videographer (either amateur or professional using any device including mobile phones) takes a series of photographs of a posed subject(s) using any part of Thanksgiving Point property as a backdrop.
