Looking for fun, educational, and hands-on ways to spark your child’s curiosity? These four STEM activities for kids are easy to do at home, each themed after a popular attraction at Imaginaria – Utah’s ultimate outdoor summer festival for kids. From bubbles and dinosaurs to pirates and bugs, these activities are designed to engage little learners in science, technology, engineering, and math through creative play.

1. Build a Pirate Boat That Floats
Inspired by: Pirate Cove at Imaginaria
You’ll Need:
– Aluminum foil
– Small plastic toy pirate or coin (for weight)
– A large bowl of water or a bathtub
– Stopwatch (optional)
How To Do It:
- Mold a piece of aluminum foil into a small boat.
- Place it in the water and see if it floats.
- Add the pirate or coin and observe if it still floats.
- Try making different shapes and see which design stays afloat the longest or holds the most weight.
STEM Concepts: Buoyancy, Engineering Design
Ask Your Kids:
– Why do you think your first boat floated or sank?
– What shape helped your boat hold the most weight, and why was it so successful?

2. Bug Symmetry Art
Inspired by: Bugtopia at Imaginaria
You’ll Need:
– White paper
– Washable paint
– Paintbrush or spoon
– Scissors
How To Do It:
- Fold a sheet of paper in half.
- On one side, paint half of a bug – body, legs, wings.
- While the paint is wet, fold the paper and press gently.
- Open the paper to reveal a symmetrical bug.
STEM Concepts: Biology, Symmetry, Art Integration
Ask Your Kids:
– What real insect does your bug look like?
– Why do you think symmetry is important in nature?

3. Dinosaur Fossil Excavation
Inspired by: Prehistoric Park at Imaginaria
You’ll Need:
– Small plastic dinosaurs or shells
– 1 cup cornstarch
– ½ cup water
– Mixing bowl
– Plastic container or tray
– Spoon or toy tools for digging
How To Do It:
- Mix cornstarch and water until you get a dough-like consistency.
- Bury your dinosaur toys inside the mix and let it dry overnight.
- Once hardened, give your child tools to chip away and uncover the fossils.
STEM Concepts: Paleontology, Observation, Patience
Ask Your Kids:
– What tools worked best for your dig?
– How do paleontologists know where to dig?

4.DIY Bubble Blower Challenge
Inspired by: Splash Bay at Imaginaria
You’ll Need:
– Dish soap
– Water
– Glycerin or corn syrup (optional for stronger bubbles)
– Pipe cleaners, straws, or plastic cups
– Mixing bowl
How To Do It:
- Mix ½ cup dish soap with 1½ cups water and 2 tablespoons glycerin or corn syrup.
- Create your own bubble blowers using straws, pipe cleaners, or cups with holes.
- Blow bubbles and test which blower creates the biggest or longest-lasting bubbles.
STEM Concepts: Chemistry, Surface Tension, Design Testing
Ask Your Kids:
– Why do you think some bubble blowers worked better?
– What do you think makes a bubble pop?
Whether you’re at home or exploring Imaginaria in person, STEM activities are a great way to inspire curiosity and creativity in your kids.
