Thanksgiving Point’s Community Outreach Programs take the excitement of STEM directly to schools, libraries, and community centers across the state. These programs are designed to make big ideas approachable, helping students of all ages see themselves as problem-solvers and innovators.
One of our newest outreach offerings is the Jr. Science Club, created specifically for children in kindergarten through 2nd grade. The goal is to make STEM concepts approachable and engaging, cultivate curiosity through inquiry, and help kids view setbacks as an essential part of the discovery process.
When we plan lessons for the Jr. Science Club, we choose topics that encourage playful exploration, spark curiosity, and invite hands-on investigation. We don’t shy away from subjects that are often reserved for older students – with the right guidance, even young learners can grasp complex ideas. Lessons begin with a simple, thought-provoking question, like: “I woke up early the other day and turned on the light. That made me wonder – how is it that I can flip the switch and the lights turn on?”
From there, we guide students through observation, experimentation, and inquiry-based activities. Instead of long lectures, our educators help children take the lead in their own play-based learning journey.
